Android Market – Market needs Background Data to be enabled

Recently I came across an issue on my Android Market. When I went to the application, it had given me the following message: Market needs Background Data to be enabled.

After doing a little bit of research, I had figured out that the issue was caused by one of the power saving features on my phone. When power saver is activated, your phone switches off certain features on it – one of them is the elusive background data. Now this issue would not only cause problems with the Android Market, but many other applications which rely on Background Data to be enabled such as Whatsapp and other push notification type apps.

In order to turn Background Data back on, all you would need to do is the following:

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on “Account & sync”
  • In here, disable and then re-enable “Background Data”

This will then resolve the issues and allow you to access your Background Data again.

If you would like to edit your “Power Saving” features to leave the Background Data on when it is trying to save power, here are the steps you need to take:

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on “Power”
  • Click on “Power saver settings”
  • Uncheck “Disable background data”

This will prevent your power saver to turn off that feature in the future.

    background data….click settings
    i don’t see account & sync

My phone (Samsung Galaxy Trend II Duos) doesn’t have the “enable background data” option. In fact, it doesn’t have the “Accounts and Sync” feature either; it just lists the accounts I have connected to in Settings, under a tab named Accounts. I can’t sign into my account in Google Play Store, it just says “Can’t establish a reliable data connection to the server”. Help, anyone?

  • Dee

What about those with a galaxy s3? I do not see that option. It keeps going to the accounts and sync but there is no option for background data. It is driving me crazy as it is going in circles!

    • Unfortunately I don’t have a Galaxy S3 to check where it is located, but since it should be using Jelly Bean try going here:

Settings -> Data Usage -> Go to the Google Play Store app or whatever app is having the issue -> Scroll down and you’ll see the option to “Restrict Background Data” – if it’s checked, uncheck it.

  • So why does market (Google Play) need background data ?
It’s only supposed to download apps.

Mine doesn’t have the background data checker?

my mobile phone will not allow me to untick or re-tick the background data box in the ‘accounts and sync’ section, and nothing will please??

    Thanks a ton! Totally helped!

  • If you’re on Android 2.3.5, Gingerbread, hold the power button for about 5 seconds to re-start the system. That’s the only way I found to fix this issue as it seems like gingerbread doesn’t have ‘power saver settings’.

My background data WAS enabled when I got this message (HTC Thunderbolt). I had to go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Market — then click Force Stop
